If the best music paints a picture, O-BE1 is nice enough to include you in this picture. He plays music to make you dance. He mixes genres and songs of comfort with such frightening smoothness you’re all comfortable again.
The young man from Oz was raised in a small country town about an hour outside of Melbourne. In high school, he started practicing on his older brother’s turntables. Then he went on to DJ local bars and clubs, as Benny D or Benny Dean, which sound like unflattering nicknames bestowed by aunts and uncles. And as his sound matured, he took the pseudonym O-BE1. Next, he moved to Melbourne and began playing at more venues with bigger crowds. One of those audiences was his headliner, the dance legend himself; Australia's two-time number-one DJ, Ajax, who quickly became a fan. Ajax recommended O-BE1 to the promoters at the notorious Honky Tonks, which turned into the club, 3rd Class. He played once and never looked back, becoming a resident on Saturday nights, as well as DJing venues all over Melbourne. Now at the age of 23, O-BE1 has moved to Los Angeles where he landed a residency at Avalon.
O-BE1 has supported notable international DJs such as Claude Vonstroke, Jesse Rose, Proxy, Justin Martin, Dada Life, Boy 8 Bit, Feadz, Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts, Zombie Disco Squad, Oliver $, D.I.M. and Breakbot, among others. It’s okay if you haven’t heard all of these DJs; you can cut, paste, and download. Passively, that’s what O-BE1’s music is—a non-genre of fragmented imagery jammed together. It’s what’s going on in your mind right before you remember something awesome. O-BE1’s PANTS PARTY MIX and last year’s MINI MIX made many people believers; however, O-BE1 live is a tactile tunnel of good taste. You’ll feel new ways about old things and old ways about new things. For now, he’s based in Los Angeles, but in the future, O-BE1 plans to weather his passport like a wallet, while playing music for people like you that aren’t like you.
